Starting Seeds for Resilient Gardens
Instructor: Ashley Haywood
Date: Wednesday, May 6 | 5:30-7:30 pm
Fee: $30 | Supplies provided
Location: NNMC El Rito campus Greenhouse
An introduction to seed starting techniques and germination principles for native,
locally adapted, and drought-tolerant species, as well as select traditional garden
crops. Learn about seed dormancy and stratification, timing, soil composition, and
practical planting methods.
Participants will sow seeds directly in greenhouse beds and start them in trays for
transplanting into on-campus rain gardens. We will explore how seeds carry the life
of a plant and the story of place — their strategies, their design, and the conditions
they need to thrive.
Whether your interest is food, medicine, ecological restoration, or personal enrichment,
you will leave with a grounded foundation for starting seeds that support resilient
gardens and local ecosystems. There will also be an opportunity to take some seeds
home!
